So for the last 2 years or so, I’ve been experimenting with abstract paintings in the background of what y’all know me for. Over the last decade or so, I’ve really grown to appreciate abstract art. I call the series “Passages”. The works are a meditation on states of being and how we move through said states. I use tar and gold leaf on indigo-dyed canvas to explore being; body, mind, and spirit (respectively). The tar material is physical... applied using only trowels or putty knives. I’m able to give dimension and texture to the surface, allowing only how it “feels” to dictate the movement of the material. With the gold leaf, I have to be patient and steady. Although no specific form is sought, I have to be thoughtful in how as well as where I apply. Finally, the canvas is raw canvas that I’ve dyed using traditional indigo dyeing techniques. I submit to the process and allow the resulting patterns and textures to surprise as well as guide me.
