Gerald Daymude (1938-2013) was Whitefish’s own colorful character, affectionately called “Cowboy Gerald.” He could be seen around town sporting his boots along with his custom made hats and other Western attire. He amassed an impressive collection over the years and would gladly tell you the story behind each piece. Around 2003 Gerald decided to call Whitefish home, trusting his faith and the warmth of the townspeople that he would be welcomed as part of the community. He came here a stranger, and passed on in December 2013 after battling cancer, leaving dear friends all around. You can ask any local, and many tourists who frequent Whitefish, if they knew about the Cowboy and you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who didn’t. When I moved to town and first laid eyes on him, I immediately wanted to paint his portrait. Some years later I finally got the chance, and was lucky enough to get to know him a little. I hope the painting honors his unique spirit and is a lasting tribute to this special man. Prints available.
