A native of Montana, Beargrass is common in subalpine meadows and high-altitude forests of the Northwest. It starts blooming in May and can reach a height of 5 feet tall. Although bears don’t actually eat it, it is food for Bighorn sheep, deer, elk and Mountain goats. Native Americans have used the leaves for basket weaving. In dark, dense forests the bright, dense blooms remind me of fireworks bursting from the ground skyward! Prints Available.
