I wanted to create a sense of exuberant space with this piece using bright color, depth and transparency. A trip to the National Aquarium in Baltimore helped to inspire the feel of this piece, and the blowfish, seaweed, stinging sea nettle, and sea anemones are based on photos taken on that visit. I included a pygmy seahorse (lower left) as well for its unexpected surface texture. Pygmy seahorses are incredibly small--usually about 2 cm in length--and their surface is made to mimic the coral they live in.
