When I arrive on site to paint en plein air, I'm usually tempted to paint the grandeur of the whole scene. But often, it's the small, intimate details of a scene that end up catching my eye and proving more satisfying. That's what happened in this case: a little branch of dead oak leaves were positively aglow with late afternoon sun, and painting them helped me understand so much about the turn of the season and the play of light in the whole scene than any larger perspective could have.
