A turning point?
There is a time in an artist's life (or I suppose in everyone's life) where something shifts. It was the case for me in May 2020 when I started painting. I feel that it is the case again this summer of 2023.
I am a self-taught artist, so much so that the artworks I created to date (190 of them) oozed out of me, many a times to my surprise, without much or any planning at all ~ pure serendipity.
I now feel compelled to study art. It started by a chance opportunity to attend a masterclass by Malaysian renowned artist Professor Jalaini Aby Hassan. I followed it by completing an online class on 'Postwar Abstract Painting' conducted by the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York City.
It is also driven by the preparation for my third solo exhibition, which will take place at Sutra House, hosted by the iconic Padma Shri Dato' Ramli Ibrahim and curated by Sivarajah Nadarajan. It will comprises of a new collection or series of original artworks, under the theme of 'Unfolding'.
Thus, this artwork, entitled 'Bumi' is the first in my exploration of the look and feel for this new series. While there is a clear connection with what I have created so far, I feel that there is also an evolution, which I see as an inflection point.
Time will tell.
