Artist: Nebeska (Becky) Aviles
Born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, Nebeska Avilés is an artisan and cultural advocate dedicated to preserving and celebrating the vibrant traditions of Puerto Rican and Caribbean art. With a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix, Nebeska combines her education with her passion for cultural preservation and traditional craftsmanship. Her deep connection to her Puerto Rican heritage and a desire to preserve art forms central to cultural identity and storytelling have shaped her artistic journey
Her work focuses on creating traditional costumes and masks, which hold a central place in Caribbean culture. These art forms, while often overlooked in modern artistic landscapes, serve as vital links to history, community, and cultural identity. Nebeska’s creations aim to honor these traditions while inviting new audiences to appreciate their significance.
Nebeska’s artistry has been featured in celebrated parades, including Parade the Circle, the Puerto Rican Parade, and the One World Day Parade, showcasing her vibrant creations to diverse audiences. Her craftsmanship has also been celebrated at institutions such as Cleveland City Hall, the Cleveland Museum of Art's Community Art Center, and moCa Cleveland. In addition to her exhibitions, Nebeska shares her knowledge through engaging workshops that inspire a new generation to connect with this artistry.
She is a proud recipient of the Support for Artist Grant from the Julia de Burgos Cultural Arts Center and a member of the Unidos por el Arte Artist Initiative, which has furthered her mission to uplift and preserve the artistic traditions of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.
