"Downwind" sailing is a broad and inclusive term. Generally, any point of sail not close-hauled is considered to be "downwind". This includes close reaching, beam reaching, broad reaching and running. Reaching is going in a direction across the wind, while running is truly going with the wind. Pieces vary in color.
