Marina was painted after a conversation with the artists friend who described to her a sailing adventure when he was a young man . He had no sailing skills and had fallen out with the crew of the tiny boat. He described his feelings of vulnerability of feeling alone in the vast seas and awe at the powerfulness of the ocean with no land or other vessels in sight.
