When I was growing up we had a set of Childcraft Books. My two favorites were the book of Poetry, and the book of Art. I would spend hours with both.
In the Poetry book, my favorite poem was Robert Louis Stevenson’s Land of Counterpane… “
My favorite painting, in the art book, was Van Gogh’s “Starry Night”.
I finally had the pleasure to see the painting about 10 years ago in New York, and was surprised at how small it was!
During Covid I had plenty of time to paint and contemplate why I painted and what was my authentic voice. I spent time reflecting on the joys of my childhood, and recalled how I would rarely use a brush when painting, but loved using my hands.
My “Starry Night” was one of the first paintings I created exclusively with my hands. Working from my intuition and staying playful, and out of my head, I was surprised when I was done how much it reminded me of the spirit of Van Gogh’s “Starry Night”, hence the title.
