The cold stare of a timeworn doorknocker on a heavily painted door in Montrose, a NE Scotland seacoast town, was the subject of this study....it was a challenge to keep painting and not get caught up in questions that kept rising in the back of my head: Who was she modeled after: What life experiences had given her such an unwelcoming visage? Who was the masterful sculptor that had captured and conveyed such an expression? This for me, is the sheer joy of my profession: considering my subject, not only it's surface physicality, but the history and implications of it's presence, and applying myself to render it in paint for myself and others to ponder!
