James de Villiers
Contemplating the Standard Model Lagrangian Formula by James de Villiers Image: I've had a lifelong interest in particle physics and cosmology. The title of the piece, "Contemplating the Standard Model Lagrangian Formula" is concerned with one of the most successful theories about how our Universe works and describes the fundamental interactions between elementary particles.  It is actually a very complex set of equations which I found mind boggling to say the least and which is included as one of the images. What I want to show in this work is that feeling experienced when we humans in our frailty and vulnerability confront such deep mysteries of our physical existence and how the particles that make up our existence can actually be codified into a model. A kind of an overwhelming feeling of awe, beauty and possibly terror in the exploration of what is happening at every moment of existence and that we are also part of an infinite unity. That's about it, to cut a long story short. I hope that gives you some idea, but you are welcome to form your own interpretations as well. If you're interested in further exploring the concept, there is a huge amount on the internet, very complex, yet fascinating.
