Mary Ann ask Laurel to do some sample butterflies as a resource for a public art installation Mary Ann was commissioned to do at University of Texas in San Antonio. Although Laurel’s butterfly images never became a part of the 2002 installation she was over the moon to help cut stencils for the installation “recuerdo” (after Tomas Rivera).

Recuerdo (after Tomas Rivera) focuses on the writing of Tomas Rivera, a revered Chicano writer, activist, and educator. The project includes a pillar and four walls and is located at the Tomas Rivera Center. Wall detail of Tomas Rivera's poem, ennui. Overview of the walls directly outside the Tomas Rivera Center. Wall with images illustrating passages from Tomas Rivera's signature work, y no se lo trago la tierra. Wall inside the Tomas Rivera Center.
