- Kawase Hasui
- The Inokashira Benten Shrine in Snow, 1929
- Woodcut
- 10 x 15 in
Kawase Hasui (1883-1957) was one of the foremost and prolific print makers in the shin-hanga ("New Prints") movement of the early 20th century. The Japanese government recognized his impact on Japan’s culture by recognizing him as a “Living National Treasure.” In this wintery scene, Hasui shows a shrine on an island in Inokashira Park in western Tokyo that is dedicated to the goddess of water, Benzaiten. Although a posthumous print with some short text missing in the side borders, it was pulled from Hasui’s original wood blocks.
