Six plates from an octavo (reduced) edition of Thomas L. McKenney and and James Hall's "History of the Indian Tribes of North America," which contains biographical sketches and anecdotes of Native Americans, first published 1836-44. The majority of the plates were based on paintings by Charles Bird King, who had been employed by the War Department for the project (most of whose paintings were destroyed by a fire at the Smithsonian). The first octavo ed. was published in 1848-50. Also see the entry in this database, Moa-Na-Hon-Ga., for the larger, earlier edition. Donated by IRC resident Amy Millen.
