The designation "Ginger Jar" dates back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) when such large vessels were used to store and transport spices such as ginger. This 20th century example was made in China for export. Acquired by IRC donor Dale Bennett about 50 years ago from Gump's in San Francisco
