  • Artist: Malia Peoples (Kanaka Maoli)

Malia Peoples is a Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) and Hakka-American arts educator, multidisciplinary artist, and cultural practitioner. She grew up between the Hawaiian islands and the lands of the Coast Salish, where she currently resides. Malia holds a degree in Chinese from the University of Washington, teaches community art at the Seattle Art Museum, and is the creative mind behind Melted Porcelain. She is enrolled in the Office of Hawaiian Affairs’ Hawaiian Registry Program.

With a background in textile arts, fashion design, and ceramics, Malia’s artistic practice has evolved over time. Her current work incorporates traditional Hawaiian arts including kapa (barkcloth), cordage, and lauhala weaving, as well as ceramics, sculpture and block printing.

Malia practices and teaches art as a way of honoring her ancestral lineage, embracing her kuleana to create and share art that uplifts others and fosters cross-cultural connections. She seeks to address the impact of internalized oppression, diasporic struggles, and the importance of unity among marginalized communities.

Malia’s art will be on exhibit at the Wing Luke Museum from June 2025 through April 2026.
