Artist: Ashley Frantz (Makah)
Ashley Frantz is from the Makah tribe and an aspiring artist based in Lacey, Washington. Currently pursuing an MFA in Studio Arts at the Institute of American Indian Arts, Ashley explores the intersections of culture, identity, and expression through various artistic mediums. Primarily a photographer, Ashley captures the complexities of Indigenous feminism, queer identity, and the relationship between culture and land. Through their work, Ashley addresses contemporary social issues and revitalizes Indigenous narratives in the modern world. Reconnecting with cultural roots is a vital part of Ashley's journey. Through language and art, they embrace ancestral stories, weaving them into contemporary expressions that challenge and inspire. This work reflects resilience and transformation and is part of a collective movement towards healing. As they develop their practice, Ashley aims to contribute to the dialogue around identity, representation, and the significance of land in Indigenous experiences, inviting audiences to reflect on their own relationships with culture and community.
