  • Artist: Arie Beston (Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians)

As an emergent and innovative Two-Spirited artist, I draw upon my direct lineage from the Turtle Mountain band of Chippewa to infuse traditional Anishinaabe art forms with contemporary relevance. Exploring mediums such as ledger art, parfleche, and basketry, I intertwine cultural revitalization and expressions of Two-Spirited sexuality in my creative endeavors. My ultimate aspiration is to secure funding and support through art work, apprenticeships and fellowships, enabling me to enrich both the artistic landscape and the Indigenous community.

I learned the art of parfleche and rawhide from my father's teacher in Turtle Mountain, which has deepened my connection to my family and our cultural heritage. My grandfather, Charles Beston, and my great-grandfather, Pete Beston, also practiced these forms, and continuing this tradition allows me to honor their legacies.

I am particularly interested in parfleche cradle boards, which embody the intersection of art and Anishinaabe parenting practices. As an artist and certified Indigenous breastfeeding counselor, I wish to support Anishinaabe families in celebrating cultural practices around nurturing.

I currently live and work in Portland, Oregon but travel regularly for art and ceremony, to various dances and collaborative artistic endeavors across turtle island.
