Surface is an environmental earthwork constructed at Socrates Sculpture Park in 1999-2000. Based on bulging burlap sacks of paint created in the studio, Surface uses earth to achieve the same tension and display of weight. Surface was designed to engage people in the experience of viewing the surface of the earth at eye level rather than the usual perspective from above. The work is a large, bulging, burlap sack of earth held up by two wing-like structures emerging from the ground. Surface is accessible by steps, located on each side of the structure, leading down into a moat-like space. In this area, viewers are at eye level with the plush, green surface of turf extending out into the distant landscape. Chamomile, planted along its perimeter, fills the immediate area with its aroma, as participants encounter the contained force of the earth. The work resembles a ceremonial or ritual place and has the appearance of an ancient dwelling existing in a contemporary landscape. Surface is the first of a series of earthworks dedicated to our relationship with the environment. The sequels to this work are Opposing Surfaces, Center of the Surface of the Earth and Under the Surface.
