Throughout December 2020, Jupiter and Saturn were aligned in the night sky in a phenomenon known as the Great Conjunction. According to NASA, it was the first time in 800 years that everyone in the world would be able to witness the event. I decided to commemorate a glimpse of the Great Conjunction on New Year's Eve as it appeared from my car window on the drive home from a family visit. After the year we had, it seemed like a reminder from the universe that despite our troubles, we are but a blip on screen of time. I used a fluorescent pastel underpainting and iridescent pastels to enhance the magical, otherworldly mood of the painting.
