From the Split Images Series
This series is derived from my continued interest in photography and collage. The pieces begin first by creating the colorful vellum labels, which come from my photography, scanned collage, and paint. Many of the photographs as well as collages are cropped and expanded to the extent of being unrecognizable in order to accent the combination and contrast of distressed textural surfaces and subdued and intense colors. With paint I am applying the paint directly to the surface of the labels, rather than digitally printing onto them. By building this work on labels I am further fracturing the original images. Through an often long and thoughtful process the labels are then rearranged into larger scale compositions. The compositions are intended to be studied, questioned and offer a refreshing perspective.
