A few summers ago I became obsessed with the flowers growing nearby and in my yard. I thought I was just going to do a couple of watercolor sketches to warm up for the series of still lives I had planned for an upcoming exhibition. Instead I spent the summer wallowing in careful observation of flowers and the abundance of the land. This work became the most important work I could do. I'm still at it.
