The majority of butterfly and moth species don't migrate, but survive the winter by entering a period of suspended development is often referred to as butterfly hibernation. In this state, they can overwinter in one of the four life stages. There is a direct correlation between the decline of native grasslands habitats and the decline of many species of butterflies, bees and moths.
