Pennsylvania was known for being one of the toughest parts of the trail due to the whole path being a giant rock scramble! This painting captures the iconic trail during one of the toughest stretches. Pennsylvania is known by many thru-hikers as "Rocksylvania" due to these ankle turning rocks.
If you take a keen eye at the work, you will notice a single white blaze marking the path on one of the rocks in the upper left. These rock blazes were notoriously hard to see and it wasn't uncommon to lose your way through the scramble!
