Over the course of a few years, I watched as a far too many close friends and family members—faced the devastating reality of breast cancer. Some were in treatment. Others were survivors. All of them carried invisible and visible scars. As I listened to their stories, stood by them, and witnessed their quiet battles, I often felt helpless. I couldn’t heal their pain. But I could honor it. I could reflect their strength, their vulnerability, their beauty, in the way I know best — through paint. I Will Not Be Defined by My Scars. I Am Beautiful is the most important and personal piece I’ve created. It is a tribute — not to the illness, but to the women who have faced it with unimaginable courage. Each brushstroke holds elements drawn from their lives, their personalities, their resilience. The figure in the painting is a fusion of them all — not a single woman, but many, each contributing to her power and poise. I created this piece to speak to those who have felt broken by circumstance, yet still radiate strength. I hope others can see themselves, or someone they love, in her. Because the women who inspired this work are nothing short of extraordinary — and they are, undeniably, beautiful.
