"When I set out to paint this painting my focus was on SPACE. I was interested in how I was going to cultivate space when I had so much going on and so much i wanted to include in the painting. Since my life reflects upon my work, I had to carve out days/weeks to just to focus upon this 36x45. When I simplify and focus on my purpose as a human being - my life flows - my art flows - the color flows. The items are inspired by my hike with my cousin Ashly, Pu’u ō’ō hike and the medicinal workshop that we took together.Akala is the native raspberry and when we discovered them we picked several leaves for tea. All this energy and the focus upon life and gratitude makes for an energetic painting. I really dove into this piece and worked on it meticulously. I was reading Merwin’s book - What is a Garden? and in it he talks about the garden being composed of shapes and colors and its how the gardener composes the plants and lets the plants take on their own habitat. How the garden is never finished. I feel that is similar to my paintings - I keep on creating these environments that never seem to come to an end - which for me is a good thing, a constant inspiration - a constant continuum of joy.
