Joel C. Moss was born in Murray, KY, on June 2, 1912. He studied at Kansas State University, George Peabody College, University of Southern California, and Columbia University as a pupil of Glen Lukens, Saul Baizermann, and Charles Martin. He was a Professor of Art and head of the Department of Art and Design at Fort Hays State University from 1946 to 1973. On October 11, 1987, the Visual Arts Center Gallery was renamed the Moss-Thorns Gallery of Art in honor of Moss and James C. Thorn, Jr. Connected to the Center for Art & Design, the Moss-Thorns Gallery is home to various student art exhibits, faculty shows and traveling exhibits throughout the year.
