A temporary community mural. Designed to bring attention to the natural world, specifically to engage young minds with the emotional impact of the dynamic feat of the Wood duckling's fledging event at a mere 24 hrs post hatching. Responding to calls from the mother duck, the ducklings leap from nests in tree cavities as high as 50 feet above the ground or water. They survive due to their downy feathers and reflexive posturing to maximize drag, pliable bones, and leaf litter that cushions when not landing in water. Natural tree hollows are becoming more scarce, but Wood Ducks seem to adapt readily to the use of wooden nest boxes first deployed in the 1930s to encourage breeding success.
