Northern Flickers (Colaptes auratus)
- Colored Pencil on Grafix drafting film
- Margaret Trent
These woodpeckers, with their colorful plumage can be found in open forests and woodland across North America. Surprisingly one will often see them on the ground, digging for insects. Flickers in the western states are red-shafted, while in the north and east they are yellow; hybrids, or intergrades, exist broadly where ranges overlap.
