Litany of Limu: Bar Codes & Bathymetry (installation and detail)

To celebrate "Year of the Limu" I collaborated with Hawai'i Sea Grant scientists & cultural practitioners to showcase algae/seaweed found in the Hawaiian archipelago. My life-sized limu sculptures were hung according to ocean depths where the species are found. Striped panels are bar graphs showing diversity of local green, red, & brown limu species. Detail photo shows the crocheted sculptures on upcycled mesh disks which refer to the grid in a microscope lens used by taxonomists (to note details) as well as a transect unit used by field biologists (to assess biodiversity) - two of my jobs prior to becoming a “fine artist."
