The Baldfaced Hornet (Dolichovespula maculata) is actually a yellowjacket and builds papery nests suspended from bushes, trees, and buildings. In the spring, the overwintered queen works alone on her small globe until the first of her brood emerge and contribute to the nest, which can grow larger than a football. The Cottonwood tree (Populus deltoides) provides both wood for the paper pulp and structure for the nest.
