The Many-headed Slime Mold (Physarum polycephalum), a protist that lives at the boundary of unicellular and multicellular life, releases spores during times of environmental stress. Some spores will germinate into haploid cells on moist forest floors, eating bacteria, until another crisis induces individual cells to unite and form a sporangium.
