The Oculea Silkmoth (Antheraea oculea) is a large, intricately patterned moth. It’s a master of camouflage in the Oak-Juniper Woodlands and mixed forests of the Huachuca Mountains of southeastern Arizona. Their caterpillar host plants include the Emory oak (Quercus emoryi), Mexican blue oak (Q. oblongifolia), and Arizona black walnut (Juglans major). Their wing span ranges from 3 15/16 to 5 7/8 inches (10 - 15 cm). This was painted from a specimen from about 5000’ (1524 m.)
