Hummingbird Clearwing Moth Hemaris thysbe
- Colored Pencil
- Janet Stephens
Hemaris thysbe is a moth from the Sphingidae (hawkmoths) family. Found in North American in ranges from Alaska to Oregon in the West and Newfoundland to Florida in the East. This particular specimen is from South Georgia. The body is covered in a thick coat of fur and their wings lose scales upon first flight leaving clear areas on the wings, hence the name “clearwing”. They also are commonly mistaken for a hummingbird as their wings beat rapidly, allowing them to dart and move quickly and hover over flowers, mimicking a hummingbird.
