Diatoms: A Window into the Past
- Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator
- Gloria Fuentes
The illustration shows the intricate and beautiful structures of five different diatoms.
Each diatom is depicted as a single-celled organism with a hard, silica-based shell known as a frustule. The frustules of diatoms are characterized by their intricate and often symmetrical patterns, which allow them to be easily identified and studied.
Diatoms are a crucial part of the aquatic environment. These microscopic unicellular algae are found in most bodies of water, and their presence is vital for oxygen production and the food chain.
