Convallaria majalis, Lily-of-the-Valley, is originally native to cool-temperate regions of Europe and Asia. The emergence each spring of their spiralling, nested pairs of leaves has always been fascinating to me, as they provide intriguing hints of the mathematical relationships that underlie biology. All of this becomes a kind of visual poetry, and to me this was the ideal moment in their life cycle to capture them in an illustration.
