Winter

Leaving native plant stems and seed heads intact sustains wildlife through the winter season. Songbirds like the Northern cardinal and Dark-eyed juncos feed on the seeds, and stems support the overwintering Black swallowtail chrysalis. The clump of Little bluestem provides shelter and a safe place to hide for the Eastern cottontail.
