Malfada Paiva (Portuguesa, b. 1973) x
Mafalda Paiva (1973) was born in Parede, Cascais, and lives in Palmela. She has a Master's degree in "Scientific Illustration" from ISEC and the University of Évora. She is the resident Illustrator at the Lisbon Archaeology Center and at the Museum of the Lisbon Sappers Firemen Regiment. She is also the scientific illustrator of the zoology research team at the University of Antofagasta, Chile. As a freelancer Mafalda worked with some of the largest publishing groups and advertising agencies in Portugal, Spain, USA, Belgium, Slovenia, Macau and Panama and is the author of illustrations for labels of some of the best known wines and olive oils in the Portuguese market. In the last years she has done multiple infographic works for National Geographic.org.
Over the last few years she has exhibited her work in Museums and Galleries in Washington, New York, Austin, Barcelona, Madrid, Venice Biennale, the European Capital of Culture in Maribor, Uberlândia (Brazil), Lisbon and Porto. Mafalda is also responsible for the graphic information of the Museu dos Lanifícios de Castelo Branco and has published dozens of works in scientific publications worldwide.
She won the International Competition IL-lustraciència 2012, Barcelona and was awarded the 2nd Prize Casa das Ciências 2013, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. She has also participated in dozens of exhibitions around the world, with emphasis on the "50th anniversary of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators (GNSI), AAAS - The American Association for the Advancement of Science", 2018, in Washington. And in editions XII, XIII, XIV and XV of the international exhibition "Focus on Nature" / New York State Museum/Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History, in New York.
