This is a depiction of the life cycle of a midwestern freshwater bivalve, Lampsilis fasciola. Lampsilis uses a modified mantle to create "lures" that are amazingly similar in appearance to the prey of predatory fish. When a fish bites the mantle a cloud of larval bivalves (glochidia) are released that attach themselves to the gills of the fish. As the larval mussels mature they detach from gills and settle to the stream bed where they mature and continue the cycle.
