Tipularia discolor is a terrestrial North American orchid that produces a single hibernal leaf in the autumn, from the plant's bulbous corms. The leaf captures sunlight from the open tree canopy throughout the winter, then it withers in the spring as the canopy fills in again. The variably-colored leaves are usually green with purple spots, and dark red undersides. Flowers emerge in the summer and are pollinated by moths. The Latin name comes from its resemblance to the crane fly genus (Tipulidae spp.). It is listed as threatened or endangered in some of the United States.
