Observations and reference photographs were made in my own pollinator habitat gardens. The vibrant Common Buckeye Butterfly (Junonia coenia) with its large eye spots is a brushfoot usually seen in late summer and into the fall. Since they are a migratory species that moves south in the fall, they need late season nectar sources such as asters. The native perennial, Calico Aster (Aster lateriflorus) growing in my garden was chosen as the perch for the Common Buckeye.
