Easily overlooked amid the built environment of New York City are hidden treasures: 22 islands that make up the Harbor Heron Islands. Throughout the history of the city these islands had many uses. They are now protected wild sanctuaries, uninhabited, (with a few exceptions) and off limits to development. These essential wild places are home to a large number of waterbird colonies.
