Artist Statement 2024
I am a retired physician and visual artist, now leading the creative life. My love for nature is expressed in my artwork. As a child, I was fascinated with the patterns and colors of flowers, lizards, snakes, birds, etc, etc. As a biology/chemistry major in college, I enjoyed microscopic images, patterns in nature, including patterns involving math, chemistry and physics. In medical school, I was intrigued with the colors and patterns of human tissue (histology), electron microscopy of bacteria and viruses, and colorful MRIs of the brain. As an elder, I appreciate all of life and am saddened by climatic change with the loss of many of the world’s species. My current works are designs from “Patterns in Nature: Turtle Shells, Animal Eyes and Diatoms.” I have also created works of art on sycamore bark which inspired “Wild Things.”
