The yellow-bellied sea snake, Hydrophis platura, ties itself into a knot to shed its skin and rub off parasites. Amazed by this, I wondered about the remote possibility of it creating a specific "sailor's" knot. I used this visual metaphor to focus attention on the struggle between a fisherman's need to feed his family and protecting the inhabitants of our Sonoran Sea from unsustainable fishing practices.

Rachel Ivanyi is a freelance illustrator who works on a variety of natural history subjects. Trained as a zoologist and scientific illustrator, she has long been drawn to the minute variations that separate one species from another and much of her work reflects this.
