Pink Alstroemeria
- Graphite on paper
- 11 x 14 in
- Rose Convery
I drew Pink Alstroemeria from life for my Drawing III class at New York Botanical Garden.
This drawing illuminates 3 views of an inflorescence flower (front, side, back) plus views of the flower at various stages of growth, from a bud to an almost-opened flower — ending with a view of the flower's stamen and pistil.
The objective was to develop my skills of observation, drawing, and composition and to render this flower as accurately as possible using a typical specimen.
Part of my artistic exploration involved sketching the plant in its entirety; then cutting out and recomposing by moving flower and leaf sketches around. Mostly, these were very minor adjustments aimed at revealing the parts of the flower clearly. All sketches were made on tracing paper with each layer becoming more refined. The final sketch was transferred to Bristol and shaded.
