How do heat pumps work?

Heat pump installations are on the rise as a sustainable heating alternative. This infographic explains how heat pumps work using coils of refrigerant—like a refrigerator, except in reverse. They don't rely on fossil fuels to run, and use very little electricity compared to baseboard or forced air furnaces. Refrigerants boil at very low temperatures and can "extract" thermal energy from ambient air even when it's very cold outside.
