Trompe l'eoil oil painting with painted frame
Jane Hyland is a freelance illustrator and artist.
She worked in the Section of Invertebrate Zoology at the
Carnegie Museum of Natural History from 1997-2018.
Her duties included preparation, dissection, illustration in
pen and ink and watercolor, and imaging of insect
specimens, primarily lepidoptera and moths for scientific
revisions, publications and exhibitions within the four
Museums of Pittsburgh.
Her freelance work as a painter and illustrator focuses on
trompe l’oeil oil paintings with wide ranging themes from
habitat destruction and symbolic representations of
natural objects from bugs, birds and botanicals.
Incorporating the scavenged detritus of the modern world
that has no regard for nature or the importance of
biodiversity. Flotsam, jetsam and found objects
discarded everywhere litters her paintings.
