Muddy Pond Wilderness Preserve is an oasis for rare plants and animals in the middle of suburban Kingston, Massachusetts. Northeast Wilderness Trust acquired this property in 2019 and chose to use interpretive signs to convey the importance of the site to locals who will have to change the ways in which they use the property. This image is the background for one of the signs. I hope that it instills pride in those who live near the property, and reminds them that they can visit Muddy Pond to take a break from the bustle of suburbia.
I visited Muddy Pond Wilderness Preserve in October 2019 and spent many hours walking the property with Northeast Wilderness Trust's land steward and a professional botanist. I took lots of reference images and even destroyed my cell phone in an attempt to take an underwater photo. The excitement about the site was palpable and that's what inspired the design for this sign.
