Gyotaku, or Japanese fish printing, was originally used to record and commemorate a fisherman’s catch.
Chokusetsu-ho, or the direct style, is the most similar to the original methodology.
Not only can this method result in pleasing illustration or fine art prints, but it is also used for fish identification and record keeeping.
This piece illustrates a trio of Black Seabass (Centropristis striata) , found in the western Atlantic Ocean.
It is valued as a sport fish and a foodsource.
It is a fish that is known to be protogynous hermaphrodites, all individuals begin life as females, with some of the population changing their sex orientation to male at a later date as needed within the population .

About the Artist: Stephen DiCerbo (b. 1957) x
Stephen DiCerbo grew up wandering about and exploring the Adirondack Mountain Region of upstate New York. Ever enchanted by the outdoor surroundings he seeks out, Stephen expresses this wonder of the natural world in the art he produces. He obtained an Associate of Science Degree in Fish and Wildlife Technology in the early eighties, and years later, pursued and completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Science Illustration.
He has traveled around the northeast United States and New England, Oregon, Montana, Colorado, Wyoming, Washington State, Nova Scotia, and British Columbia in a quest for more knowledge and experiences in varied environmental settings.
Currently, Stephen works out of Stormtree Studio in North Hudson, New York, in the Central Adirondack area. He practices Natural Science Illustration as well as fine art and printmaking, specializing in Ichthyologic subject matter. He may be contacted at (518) 466-7004 or by email –
